Does Everyone In Your Life Expect You To Be Superwoman?
Do you ever feel like your life is so busy you’ve lost your sense of self? Maybe you’ve been doing so much for other people that you’ve neglected self-care. Your friends and family may tell you that you don’t seem like yourself lately—and perhaps they’re right. Maybe you feel increasingly tired, irritable, and unmotivated. What you thought was a passing phase could have turned into a long-term issue, and you feel too emotionally stuck to move forward.
People probably expect a lot from you. They may treat you like superwoman, directly or indirectly laying many of their problems on you and expecting you to solve them. In the end, this can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Additionally, there could be relationship or perinatal issues that you are facing. I support women dealing with every stage of adulthood, from college to career to marriage to parenthood.
As a woman and a mother myself, I find great meaning in being a supportive parent—all the way from pregnancy stress to baby blues to adapting to life as an empty nester. I recognize that both our bodies and minds endure a great deal of wear and tear because of pregnancy and motherhood. In the wake of giving birth, we often experience a whole host of new emotions that take a toll on us, our marriage and other areas of our lives. What’s more, there are often new financial constraints. It’s why I make sure you learn easily accessible and affordable tools for not just managing but thriving during this huge change in your life and your relationships.
Whether parenthood is a new adjustment or you have had kids for decades, these major transitions are hard for anyone. In therapy, we will address any feelings that may be wearing you down, such as shame or low self-worth, and uncover how and why those feelings show up in your life. Whether you find your behavior changing in ways such as crying, yelling, procrastinating, avoiding things you once enjoyed, or turning to alcohol to cope with stress, I am confident that I can empower you with tools to face the future with serenity and confidence.
Many Women In Today’s World Feel Overworked And Overburdened
In our fast-paced, success-crazed modern world, most of us feel overworked and unable to find peace in our lives. And competitive culture doesn’t exactly respect the emotional struggles women experience. Many of us feel shame in coming forward about our suffering. Pain is part of the human condition, however, and we are meant to find support from others.
On your own, though, it’s often hard to know who to reach out to for help. The people closest to you may not fully understand what you’re going through. Or they may not be able to handle it right now, if they are stretched thin themselves.
Clients find my approach uniquely warm, nurturing and empathetic, empowering them to find clarity and self-compassion. With healing they are able to let go of negative or limiting beliefs and embrace their strengths and gifts. I want the same for you.
Women’s Counseling Is A Time To Feel Understood, Listened To, And Validated
Whether you are seeking pregnancy therapy, postpartum counseling, depression or anxiety therapy, I am confident I can assist you. Women’s counseling is a chance for you to feel understood, listened to, and validated in your struggles. I want to help you shoulder your burdens so that you don’t have to bear them alone.
In the intake process, you and I will discuss your treatment goals and decide on a schedule for meeting together. Typically this will be on a weekly basis so that you can gain momentum for insight and change. For clients experiencing more serious symptoms, however, we can meet more often.
My approach to women’s counseling is holistic, meaning we will address every aspect of your life. We will keep track of your physical health, mental health, and relationships. One of the core approaches of my practice is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which looks at the connections between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This approach will help you become more in tune with your emotions and enhance your overall well-being. My hope is that the insights and self-knowledge you learn will positively impact all areas of your life, including your relationships and family.
Ultimately, I hope to help you achieve a mental reset—a fresh start to navigate your next big challenge. For pregnancy, this means equipping you to be emotionally prepared for motherhood, with your baby and your husband or partner. For those dealing with postpartum blues, I will help you get on a research-backed “Path to Wellness” so you can feel like yourself again and enjoy motherhood and marriage.
You may have some questions and concerns about women’s counseling…
What if my loved one wants to come to therapy with me?
They are more than welcome to! Therapy is driven by your goals. That said, involving a loved one in therapy requires thoughtful assessment and preparation. Once we fully determine your individual needs, we can map out and execute a considered session or two (or more, if requested) with your loved one.
What are your thoughts on medication?
Medication is what I call an “unspoken” but often very necessary aspect of therapy. While counselors cannot prescribe medication, I will likely see you more often than your general practitioner. I will help you evaluate if medication could a useful tool for you, either temporarily or in the long term. If I see medication as something that could significantly impact your quality of life, I will let you know sooner rather than later. Your time is too valuable for me to do anything less.
How long will counseling take?
Everyone’s circumstances are different, so there is no magic number of sessions that it will take to heal. Some clients report feeling a measure of relief from the moment they book their first appointment. The amount of work clients complete between sessions can influence the time needed for counseling. Postpartum therapy clients are often pleasantly surprised by how quickly therapy provides relief.
